CardioSmart Points Patients in the Right Direction
April 09, 2013
From the CardioSmart.org Team
A recent study highlighted at the American College of Cardiology's 62nd Annual Scientific Session found that people who received cash rewards as part of a weight loss program shed more pounds than participants who weren't given financial incentives. Leveraging social engagement and technology, like the popular sites SparkPeople and Endomondo, can also motivate people to live healthier. While CardioSmart doesn't pay patients and caregivers to maintain their heart health, it does reward them for healthy behavior through points and incentives. This approach, combined with CardioSmart's social and digital features and tools, gives users an extra nudge as they make behavior changes to prevent, treat and manage heart disease.
Patients and caregivers begin accumulating CardioSmart Points from the moment they register (100 points) and can continue to add to their tallies by participating in CardioSmart Challenges or by performing various actions on the site. Challenges—which typically involve tracking blood pressure, physical activity, waist circumference and weight—start anew each month and are an easy way for registered users to earn points. Users earn ten points for every health log entry they make during a challenge and another 100 points upon successful completion of a challenge.
In addition to challenges, registered users can earn points by taking certain actions on CardioSmart.org. The more engaged users are, the more points they'll earn. These actions include but aren't limited to:
- Choosing conditions and topics of interest
- Signing up for CardioSmart's TXT Prevent or TXT Quit text messaging programs
- Recording their medication information
- Saving questions to ask their doctor to a toolbox
- Entering the names of care team members
- Signing up for newsletters
- Posting messages in the discussion forum
- Referring peers to CardioSmart
Points never expire and can be redeemed in the CardioSmart Store for CardioSmart-branded prizes such as a hydration pack or a yoga mat. New prizes will be added to the collection of products from time to time, including items sponsored by CardioSmart partners. Refer your patients to CardioSmart and encourage them to register and begin using all of the resources available. Not only will they be taking control of their heart health, they might just earn some prizes for doing so!
